Mr Joel Humphrey did not fall into foot and ankle surgery. He planned for it. From an undergraduate degree in Orthopaedic Sciences, through a Master's in Sports Medicine, to subspecialty training in London, Cambridge and Oxford, every step of his career has pointed at one part of the body. At Mercury Foot & Ankle, that training is now available to patients in Milton Keynes and Banbury.
Built for this specialty from the start
He began with a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Orthopaedic Sciences at University College London — an undergraduate route few medical students take — which gave him an early grounding in musculoskeletal biology and biomechanics. He qualified in medicine at Barts and The London School of Medicine, then completed his specialist registrar training in Trauma and Orthopaedics across Guy's, King's and St Thomas' in London.
A Master's in sport, and a life spent in it
Mr Humphrey holds a Master's degree in Sports and Exercise Medicine, and he lives by it. He has run several European marathons and taken part in Arctic Circle expeditions, and sport is a central part of his life. It matters in the clinic. When a patient says an injury is stopping them running, cycling or keeping up with their children, he understands what that means in practice, not only as a diagnosis.
Shaping national standards at BOFAS
Mr Humphrey is a Council Member of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, the body that represents foot and ankle surgery in the United Kingdom, and he chairs its Clinical Practice Committee. In that role he helps set the standards and quality frameworks that govern foot and ankle care across the NHS and the private sector. He is also Thames Valley Trauma Network Lead at Milton Keynes University Hospital, overseeing the management of complex trauma across the network.
What to expect from a consultation
Patients describe a surgeon who gives them time, explains the options honestly, and puts non-operative treatment first where it is appropriate. Several reviews note that he advised against surgery when it was not needed, which patients particularly value. He will give you a thorough assessment, an honest recommendation, and a plan built around you.
Subspecialty fellowships
- Foot and Ankle Reconstruction Fellowship, Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge
- Trauma Fellowship, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford
